Google has launched a new feature in Google Classroom, utilizing a Gemini-powered tool to create podcast-style audio lessons. This innovation is designed to engage students who are keen podcast listeners and promote deeper comprehension of educational material.
To get started, educators simply navigate to the Gemini tab within Google Classroom. There, they can choose various customization options, such as selecting the appropriate grade level, defining specific topics, and setting clear learning objectives. The audio experience can be further personalized by selecting the number of speakers or opting for different conversational styles, including interviews, roundtable discussions, or casual dialogues.
This new functionality is presently available to subscribers of Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus.
By integrating this familiar format into the classroom, teachers can effectively tap into their students’ existing interests. Research indicates that students spend considerable time listening to podcasts, with an estimated 35 million Gen Z individuals in the U.S. listening monthly.
Furthermore, the popularity of podcasts as educational resources has rapidly increased; many universities now produce their own, and students are increasingly seeking out popular educational series independently. Podcast-formatted lessons could also encourage independent learning, as students have the flexibility to replay episodes whenever they need a refresher or have missed a class.
However, educators are still navigating the integration of AI tools into their teaching practices. Many teachers express concerns about students’ increasing reliance on generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, for completing assignments.
Google advises teachers to practice responsible AI and diligently review and, if necessary, modify all AI-generated content to ensure its accuracy and appropriateness for their specific classroom context and local policies.
Gemini for Classroom first launched in 2024, and Google has consistently introduced new features since its debut. Most recently, the company unveiled significant updates last June, including functionalities that assist teachers with brainstorming, developing lesson plans, and customizing instructional materials for their students.
