Anthropic Appoints Former Microsoft India MD Irina Ghose to Lead India Expansion

U.S. AI firm Anthropic has named Irina Ghose, previously Microsoft India’s managing director, to spearhead its operations in India, coinciding with its upcoming office launch in Bengaluru. This appointment highlights India’s emergence as a crucial growth territory for AI companies seeking to extend their reach beyond the American market.

Ghose contributes extensive operational expertise from her 24-year tenure at Microsoft, which concluded in December 2025. Her leadership provides Anthropic with an experienced professional possessing vital local business and government connections as the company prepares to build its physical footprint in India, one of the globe’s most rapidly expanding AI landscapes.

India is now a pivotal strategic market for Anthropic, already serving as the second-largest user base for Claude, with a strong inclination towards technical and professional applications like software development. Competitor OpenAI is similarly intensifying its efforts in this region, intending to establish an office in New Delhi — indicating India’s rapid transformation into a fiercely competitive battleground for advancing generative AI globally.

Despite India’s immense user base, boasting over a billion internet subscribers and more than 700 million smartphone users, monetizing this vast audience has been challenging. This has prompted AI firms to implement bold pricing and promotional strategies. For instance, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go, a sub-$5 offering for Indian consumers, which was subsequently provided free for a year in the market.

Anthropic is experiencing comparable market trends: In September, its Claude app saw a 48% year-over-year rise in Indian downloads, totaling approximately 767,000 installations. Consumer expenditure also dramatically increased by 572% to $195,000 that month, according to Appfigures, though this remains considerably lower than the U.S. market’s $2.5 million spending in September.

Anthropic has been escalating its presence in India through high-level interactions. CEO Dario Amodei made a visit in October, engaging with business leaders and government officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss the firm’s growth strategies and the increasing use of its AI tools. Earlier reports from TechCrunch indicated Anthropic considered collaborating with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries to expand Claude’s availability. However, Reliance ultimately chose Google, offering its Gemini AI Pro plan for free to Jio users. Concurrently, competitor Bharti Airtel collaborated with Perplexity to provide bundled access to its premium service, demonstrating the pivotal role of India’s telecom companies as essential channels for widespread consumer AI adoption.

Ghose, in a LinkedIn update regarding her appointment, stated her primary objective would be to collaborate with Indian businesses, developers, and startups utilizing Claude for essential applications, noting a rising need for what she termed “reliable, enterprise-level AI.” She further suggested that AI customized for local languages could significantly boost various fields, such as education and healthcare, indicating Anthropic’s strategy to extend its reach beyond initial tech adopters to broader institutions and governmental bodies.

This intensified focus by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Perplexity occurs as India’s native generative AI sector is still in its nascent stages. Despite possessing a rich reservoir of software professionals and a rapidly expanding AI user population, India has yielded only a limited number of startups developing foundational large models. Instead, investors have predominantly funded application-layer firms, rather than providing the substantial capital typically needed for cutting-edge system development.

This new hire precedes India’s AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for February, where the Indian government plans to convene AI startups, international CEOs, and sector specialists to deliberate on the future of AI implementation within the nation. The summit aligns with New Delhi’s overarching strategy to encourage indigenous AI innovation and establish India as a formidable contender in the worldwide AI arena, amidst escalating global market competition.

Anthropic is concurrently expanding its team in India, evidenced by available positions for roles such as startup and enterprise account executives, alongside a partner sales manager. This indicates a strategic drive to bolster its market entry tactics and engage Indian companies and emerging businesses as clients, thereby solidifying its footprint in the nation.

This appointment provides Anthropic with crucial senior local leadership, essential for transforming India’s rapidly increasing AI usage into a sustainable commercial operation. The company must skillfully navigate a market where successful distribution collaborations, competitive pricing strategies, and widespread enterprise integration will determine the enduring leaders in the AI sector.
