Elon Musk’s Ambitious Terafab Project for Tesla and SpaceX Chips

Elon Musk recently detailed an ambitious initiative for Tesla and SpaceX to jointly produce semiconductor chips.

Bloomberg reports that Musk unveiled these plans during a Saturday evening event in downtown Austin, Texas. A photograph accompanying the announcement indicates that the proposed “Terafab” facility would be situated close to Tesla’s Austin headquarters and “gigafactory.”

Musk stated that the motivation behind this endeavor stems from the current inability of semiconductor producers to meet the chip demands for his companies’ artificial intelligence and robotics requirements. He emphasized, “We must construct the Terafab, otherwise, we will lack the necessary chips; since we require the chips, we are building the Terafab.”

Musk outlined the objective: to produce chips capable of supporting an annual computing capacity of 100 to 200 gigawatts on Earth, in addition to a terawatt in space. However, he did not provide a specific timeline for these objectives.

Bloomberg highlighted that while Musk lacks experience in semiconductor manufacturing, he has a track record of setting ambitious goals and timelines that are often not met.
