On Monday, TikTok revealed the launch of an AI-driven shopping assistant alongside a new in-app checkout option, enabling users to complete purchases directly from brands.
TikTok’s new Shopping Assistant is described as an AI-powered conversational tool designed to aid users in discovering and buying products. The company states that this assistant comprehends context and retains user preferences and needs throughout conversations. It provides real-time, AI-powered shopping assistance, including product specifications, shipping details, sizing, availability, and help with completing transactions.
Regarding the new checkout feature, TikTok explained that users can make direct purchases from brands with a single click while browsing their For You feed (the app’s primary, algorithm-curated video stream).
These enhancements could allow TikTok to monopolize more of the user’s shopping journey and potentially increase transaction value by keeping users within the platform. By combining a shopping assistant with integrated payment options, TikTok transforms its discovery-focused feed into a hub where users can get product information and finalize purchases instantly.
By integrating an AI shopping assistant directly into its application, TikTok seems to anticipate that users will consult its platform for product inquiries rather than external AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The company stated that these new functionalities are being developed in collaboration with various commerce platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe, among others.
While TikTok Shop, the platform’s proprietary marketplace, has been central to the company’s e-commerce goals, these new features broaden its strategy beyond the existing shopping hub. Instead of relying solely on TikTok Shop to facilitate purchases, the social network is now embedding shopping tools more deeply into the main app, including the For You feed.
This expansion occurs as TikTok’s impact on consumer spending continues to grow. According to TikTok’s Economic Impact Report, released last week, platform activity generated $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses, with 54 million Americans reporting a product purchase after viewing a TikTok video.
TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023. Market research firm eMarketer projects it generated approximately $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, accounting for roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce.
