ChatGPT is set to become significantly more visual, as OpenAI introduces a new capability named Intelligent UI. This innovative interface, launching Wednesday alongside a new GPT-6 model, will embed extensive visual elements directly into user interactions.
Many of these visual components are designed to be interactive, according to OpenAI. This means the chatbot will move beyond simple, static images, often incorporating dynamic features such as clickable buttons, custom-tailored calculators for particular operations, interactive data charts, editable graphical representations, and other components users can engage with directly.
OpenAI’s primary objective with this update is to “simplify the learning of intricate subjects.” While not explicitly stated, this enhancement could also render ChatGPT more user-friendly and approachable, thereby attracting a broader user base.
During a press briefing, OpenAI personnel showcased Intelligent UI’s potential, demonstrating how the updated chatbot can rapidly generate diverse diagrams and visual aids, aiding users in grasping abstract concepts more effectively.
Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, noted that despite ChatGPT primarily functioning as a text-based platform, the company is driven to enable users to “accomplish tasks” – whether daily activities like meal or travel planning, or pursuing knowledge – recognizing that the most beneficial responses often extend beyond mere text.
Selvan provided an illustration involving a university student curious about airplane wing mechanics. When prompted to “explore how an airplane wing generates lift,” ChatGPT promptly produced several diagrams illustrating the principles of flight.
Further examples shared by the company encompassed recipe visualizations, a diagram detailing bicycle functionality, a map for extended hiking trips, a personalized savings calculator, among others.
This novel capability offers customization, allowing users to reduce the prevalence of visuals in their responses, similar to adjusting other ChatGPT settings. Intelligent UI is launching globally for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise subscribers alongside GPT-6, with availability extended to free and more affordable Go tier users on Thursday.
