Apple unveiled its yearly compilation of the most downloaded applications and games on Wednesday. In the U.S., OpenAI’s ChatGPT emerged as the leading free iPhone app (excluding games) by installations in 2025.

Following the AI application were Threads, Google, TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google’s Gemini.

While ChatGPT secured the fourth position last year, the top rank was held by the Chinese e-commerce application Temu. In 2023, the AI app did not enter the top-10, even after its successful iPhone launch in May 2023.

ChatGPT’s ability to surpass established social networking platforms and essential utilities like Google Maps highlights AI’s profound integration into daily American life. Furthermore, it suggests OpenAI’s capacity to challenge Google’s dominance in the mobile search arena, as an increasing number of users prioritize chatbots for information.

Early indicators suggested ChatGPT’s ascent to the top spot this year, as it became the globally most-downloaded app in March, surpassing major contenders such as TikTok and Instagram.

Additionally, Apple revealed its rankings for leading paid applications, the most popular free and paid games across iPhone and iPad, and the premier Apple Arcade titles.

This year, Block Blast! emerged as the foremost free game, with Minecraft being recognized as the top paid game. For iPad, YouTube claimed the top free app position, while Procreate, a creativity app, was the most downloaded paid game on iPad. Roblox was the leading free iPad game.
