Wikimedia Foundation Forges New AI Tech Partnerships for Wikimedia Enterprise

During its 25th-anniversary festivities, the Wikimedia Foundation revealed new collaborations with various AI technology companies, who are now clients of its commercial offering, Wikimedia Enterprise. This product, created by the foundation, facilitates the widespread repurposing and dissemination of material from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia initiatives.

Building on its previously disclosed collaboration with Google in 2022, the foundation also made public for the first time its new alliances forged over the last year with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. Earlier acknowledged partners such as Ecosia, Pleias, and ProRata are also part of this latest disclosure, alongside Nomic and Reef Media.

These agreements offer Wikipedia an additional revenue stream for self-sustainability, particularly as AI models and other technological offerings increasingly extract and repurpose its content to deliver swift, accurate responses to user inquiries. Beyond merely securing payment for usage, Wikimedia Enterprise, as a commercial product, also grants these tech firms access to Wikimedia projects at a scale and velocity tailored to their specific data requirements.

In a blog post, the foundation further highlighted that Wikipedia remains one of the world’s top 10 most-frequented websites, with users accessing over 65 million articles in more than 300 languages, totaling almost 15 billion views monthly.

Wikimedia Foundation’s CPO/CTO, Selena Deckelmann, stated, “Wikipedia demonstrates that knowledge is inherently human and necessitates human involvement. Particularly in the current AI era, the human-driven knowledge found on Wikipedia is more vital than ever.” She added, “Thanks to the ongoing support from readers, volunteer editors, donors, partners, and enthusiasts worldwide, Wikipedia will continue to be the essential online center for human-generated knowledge and collaboration for the next quarter-century and beyond.”

Alongside the disclosure of its tech agreements, the foundation rolled out a birthday initiative featuring a new video documentary series that offers an intimate look at Wikipedia’s global volunteer community. They also unveiled a “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule, allowing exploration of the site’s history, current state, and future, partly narrated by founder Jimmy Wales. A live-streamed birthday celebration is also scheduled for January 15, at 4:00 p.m. UTC, promising guests, games, and entertainment. This event will be accessible via Wikipedia

’s YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels.

The foundation’s birthday communications also drew attention to other recent advancements, such as enhancements to its technological infrastructure, its unique stance on AI, innovative projects including games and short-form video, among others.
