Humans&, an emerging company committed to empowering individuals through AI rather than displacing them, has successfully raised $480 million in seed funding, achieving a valuation of $4.48 billion, as reported by The New York Times. Key investors in this round include chipmaker Nvidia, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and venture capital firms such as SV Angel, Google Ventures, and Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective.
This significant investment for the three-month-old company reflects a growing trend of capital flowing into startups founded by alumni from leading AI research laboratories. Humans&’s founding team comprises Andi Peng, a former Anthropic researcher specializing in reinforcement learning and the post-training development of Claude 3.5 through 4.5; Georges Harik, Google’s seventh employee, who contributed to building its inaugural advertising systems; Eric Zelikman and Yuchen He, both ex-xAI researchers involved in the creation of the Grok chatbot; and Noah Goodman, a Stanford University professor with expertise in psychology and computer science.
According to the company, Humans&’s team of approximately 20 employees also includes talent from OpenAI, Meta, Reflection, AI2, and MIT. The startup’s objective is to develop software that enhances human collaboration—envisioning an AI-enhanced version of an instant messaging application. One of their principal aims is to apply existing AI techniques to innovative training methods, such as programming chatbots to actively solicit and retain user-provided information for future use.
To establish AI that functions as “a deeper connective tissue that strengthens organizations and communities,” Humans& intends to re-evaluate “how we train models at scale and how people interact with AI,” as stated on the company’s web page. The startup highlighted the necessity for advancements in “long-horizon and multi-agent reinforcement learning, memory, and user understanding,” alongside a closely integrated approach combining scientific research and product development.
