Google Photos Introduces “Me Meme” Feature for Personalized AI Memes

Google Photos now allows you to generate memes using your own images. On Thursday, Google unveiled a new generative AI-powered tool called “Me Meme,” which enables you to combine a photo template with your own picture to create a meme.

This new feature, initially rolled out to U.S.-based users, was first identified during development last October by the Android Authority blog. Google formally announced it on Thursday through its Photos Community site.

Google states that the feature is experimental, therefore generated images “might not perfectly match the original photo.” It advises uploading well-lit, focused, and front-facing pictures to achieve the best outcomes.

This addition is intended to provide a fun way to explore your photos and experiment with Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically Nano Banana. Google’s popular AI image model powers other AI functionalities in the Google Photos app, such as the ability to recreate images in new styles like cartoons or paintings.

Although a relatively unserious addition, features of this kind encourage users to return to the Photos app whenever they wish to engage with AI tools, rather than resorting to a competitor’s product.

Furthermore, users tend to favor features that incorporate themselves into AI edits, a trend observed by OpenAI with the successful launch of its Sora app, which allows you to create AI videos featuring yourself and your friends.

The “Me Meme” feature is not yet fully deployed, so you might not see it in your updated Google Photos app right away. Google states that once available, it will appear under the “Create” tab. A Google representative informed TechCrunch that the feature will reach U.S. iOS and Android users over the “coming weeks.”

To use the feature, you will select a template or upload your own, then tap “add photo” and “Generate.” Google mentions that more templates will be added progressively. After the AI generates the image, you can save it, share it on other platforms, or tap “regenerate” to create an alternative version.
