Last year, Roblox released an open-source AI model capable of generating 3D objects within the platform, enabling users to rapidly design digital assets such as furniture, vehicles, and accessories. The company reports that this tool, named Cube 3D, has facilitated the creation of over 1.8 million 3D objects since its launch last March.
On Wednesday, the company launched the open beta for its highly anticipated 4D creation feature, which empowers creators to make not only static 3D models but also fully functional and interactive objects. This feature has been in early access since November.
Roblox states that 4D creation introduces a crucial new dimension: interactivity. Through this technology, users can design items that can move and respond to players within the game environment.
At its debut, creators can experiment with two types of object templates, referred to as schemas.
The first is the “Car-5” schema, designed for creating cars composed of five distinct components: the main body and four wheels. Previously, cars existed as a single, immutable 3D object without motion capabilities. The new approach deconstructs objects into parts and assigns specific behaviors to each, allowing them to function independently within the virtual world. Consequently, the AI can generate cars with rotating wheels, enhancing their realism and interactivity.
The second schema is called “Body-1,” which enables the generation of any object formed from a single piece, such as a basic box or a sculpture.
The initial application of 4D generation can be experienced in a game titled Wish Master, where players have the ability to generate and operate cars, fly planes, and even summon dragons.
Looking ahead, Roblox intends to allow creators to develop their own schemas, granting them greater flexibility in defining object behaviors. The company also mentions the development of new technology that could utilize a reference image to produce a detailed 3D model matching the image’s style (an example is shown below).
The company asserts its commitment to developing more AI-powered methods to assist in game and experience creation, including a project it has dubbed “real-time dreaming.” Roblox CEO David Baszucki previously explained last month that this initiative would enable creators to construct new worlds by using “keyboard navigation and sharing real-time text prompts.”
This open beta follows Roblox’s recent implementation of mandatory facial verification for all global users to access chat features in the game, a measure taken after lawsuits and investigations concerning child safety.
