Meta Explores Standalone Vibes App for AI-Generated Video Content

Meta has confirmed to TechCrunch that it is currently evaluating a standalone application for Vibes. Introduced in September, Vibes enables users to produce and distribute concise AI-generated videos, along with providing a specialized feed for viewing AI videos created by others.

Envision a platform similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but exclusively featuring AI-generated content. Previously integrated within the Meta AI app, Vibes’ transition to a standalone offering positions it to directly compete with Sora, OpenAI’s AI-powered video and social application introduced soon after Vibes.

In an emailed statement, Meta explained, “Given the significant early engagement Vibes has garnered within Meta AI, we are exploring a standalone application to capitalize on this progress.” The company noted a growing trend of users utilizing the format to generate, explore, and share AI-created videos with their contacts. They believe a dedicated app will offer a more focused and immersive experience for this activity, with future expansions guided by community feedback.

Platformer was the initial source to report this development.

While Meta refrains from disclosing precise figures, the company asserts that Vibes has demonstrated strong performance, observing consistent growth in Meta AI usage since its inception. This growth, Meta suggests, indicates a clear demand for a dedicated application.

The technology behemoth further highlighted that although users interact with content within Meta AI, a separate app would facilitate a more concentrated environment for both content creation and user interaction.

Vibes empowers users to either craft entirely new videos or re-edit existing ones found in their feed. Prior to publication, creators can incorporate fresh visuals, integrate music, and modify stylistic elements. Finished videos can then be shared directly to the Vibes feed, sent privately via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.

Meta observes an increase in collaborative activities and sharing, noting that numerous Vibes videos are being privately messaged to friends, a usage pattern the company likens to that of Reels.

Notably, Meta informed TechCrunch last week that alongside trials for new premium subscriptions across its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms, it intends to investigate subscription models for AI functionalities, Vibes among them.

Despite Vibes being offered without cost since its debut, Meta intends to implement a freemium model for video creation within the app. This will include a subscription option to gain access to extra video creation features monthly. Meta anticipates introducing these trial subscriptions in the forthcoming months.
