Anthropic is reportedly nearing the completion of a fundraising round to secure over $20 billion, pushing its valuation to $350 billion, according to Bloomberg. Investor interest significantly exceeded expectations, leading the company to double its initial funding target. This comes just five months after raising $13 billion in equity, as intense competition among leading AI labs and the substantial costs associated with compute resources drive a rapid pursuit of capital.
Expected participants in this funding round include prominent firms such as Altimeter Capital Management, Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Menlo Ventures, Coatue Management, Iconiq Capital, and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund. However, the majority of the investment is anticipated to originate from strategic partners Nvidia and Microsoft.
Anthropic has been building on a string of recent triumphs, most notably with the introduction of its coding agents, which have drawn high praise from software engineers for enhancing coding efficiency. Just last week, the company’s launch of new AI models tailored for legal and business research caused a stir among publicly traded data firms, as investors grew concerned about AI’s potential to disrupt their established markets.
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI, is reportedly in the process of raising a new $100 billion funding round. Both companies are believed to be gearing up for initial public offerings (IPOs) ahead of what is expected to be a major summer in the markets. Additionally, xAI, recently acquired by SpaceX, is also slated to tap public equity markets as part of the rocket manufacturer’s IPO plans.
