Hauler Hero has successfully secured new funding as the demand for its AI-driven waste management software continues to surge.
According to TechCrunch, the New York-based startup recently closed a $16 million Series A funding round, spearheaded by Frontier Growth and including investments from K5 Global, Somersault Ventures, and other firms. This latest infusion brings Hauler Hero’s total venture capital raised to over $27 million.
Hauler Hero has created a comprehensive, all-in-one software platform specifically designed for waste management businesses, encompassing diverse functions such as customer relationship management, billing, and route optimization. Following a trend among numerous software providers, Hauler Hero intends to extend AI agent capabilities to its clientele.
In 2020, CEO Mark Hoadley and his brother-in-law Ben Sikma co-founded Hauler Hero. Their motivation stemmed from encountering obsolete software during their work on mergers and acquisitions within the waste management industry, leading them to pursue the goal of modernizing the sector.
“The prevalent software solutions in this domain were cumbersome and antiquated,” Hoadley remarked to TechCrunch in 2024. He added, “We’d occasionally compare them to ‘The Oregon Trail’ or the bulky cell phone Michael Douglas carried in ‘Wall Street.’ They were decidedly clumsy and outmoded.”
Evidencing its progress, Hauler Hero reports having facilitated 35 million waste collections since its establishment in 2020. Hoadley further informed TechCrunch that the company is experiencing continuous expansion, having doubled its employee count, revenue, and client roster since revealing its seed funding round in late 2024.
Since its seed funding, Hauler Hero has introduced new functionalities to its platform, as stated by Hoadley. A standout addition is a feature that captures images from external cameras mounted on garbage trucks, transmitting them straight to a central software command center. The company notes that this data assists waste management firms in confirming collections, verifying invoices, and enhancing oversight of their dispersed vehicle fleet.
Hoadley acknowledged that some sanitation personnel and their unions express reservations about this technological enhancement. However, he clarified that the majority of unions prohibit the use of such footage for disciplinary actions against drivers. Moreover, he highlighted that these images can actually mitigate driver liability in cases of accidents or allegations of missed collections.
“Imagine operating a factory without a roof, lacking any insight into its ongoing operations,” Hoadley explained. He continued, “Without clear visibility into what’s occurring externally, maintaining quality control becomes exceptionally challenging. In this context, quality control hinges on knowing what items were present and whether they were successfully collected.”
A Trio of AI Agents
Hauler Hero is currently engaged in the creation and implementation of a suite of three distinct AI agents. Hero Vision is designed to autonomously pinpoint service discrepancies and potential revenue streams. Hero Chat functions as a conversational AI for handling customer questions. Lastly, Hero Route will leverage routing data to dynamically optimize routes for improved efficiency.
“Our system contains a vast quantity of data related to collections, work orders, and billing information,” Hoadley stated. “By providing these agents with an understanding of your data model, you can simply instruct them to generate a chart.”
Hauler Hero intends to allocate a portion of its recently acquired funds towards the commercialization of these AI agents, alongside expanding its services for municipal clients, an increasing segment of the company’s customer base.
Regarding collaborations with public entities, Hoadley commented, “This wasn’t initially a planned aspect of our venture. It unfolded organically, as many developments do. We began receiving inquiries from several municipalities, ultimately leading to sales to one, and then another.”
Hoadley attributed some of this demand to the 2024 merger of their primary competitors, Routeware and Wastech, which he believes left governmental organizations with limited vendor options.
Hoadley indicated that the company’s current priorities include refining and expanding its product, with potential for further new features.
“Our commitment is to remain at the forefront for the next decade, consistently delivering value to customers by harnessing the newest tools,” Hoadley affirmed. He added, “We foresee many more exciting and beneficial opportunities to serve our customers, and we are genuinely enthusiastic about them.”
