xAI Publicly Shares All-Hands Meeting, Revealing Reorganization, Financial Updates, and Elon Musk’s Galactic Vision

On Wednesday, xAI took the unusual step of releasing a complete 45-minute all-hands meeting video on X for public viewing. This decision may have been influenced by previous reports by The New York Times regarding details from the Tuesday night meeting.

The full video provides significant new insights into Musk’s ambitious plans for the AI laboratory, including its product development roadmap and its continued synergy with the X platform.

The most immediate disclosure addressed a series of employee departures, which Musk characterized as layoffs resulting from an evolving organizational structure within the company. While corporate reorganizations are typical, the extent of these departures has generated considerable confusion, particularly as it has led to the loss of a substantial portion of the founding team.

“As a company grows, especially as quickly as xAI, the structure must evolve,” Musk posted on X. “This unfortunately required parting ways with some people. We wish them well in future endeavors.”

The revised organizational framework divides xAI into four main teams: one dedicated to the Grok chatbot (including voice capabilities), another for the app’s coding system, a third for the Imagine video generator, and finally a team focused on the Macrohard project, which encompasses simulations from basic computer usage to modeling entire corporations.

“[Macrohard] is able to do anything on a computer that a computer is able to do,” stated Toby Pohlen, who will lead this project under the new structure, to his colleagues. “There should be rocket engines fully designed by AI.”

The all-hands meeting also featured discussions on new usage and revenue figures for both xAI and X. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, announced that X had “just surpassed” $1 billion in annual recurring revenue from subscriptions, attributing this achievement to a holiday marketing campaign.

Additionally, executives disclosed that xAI’s Imagine tool is generating 50 million videos daily and over 6 billion images within the past 30 days, according to their internal metrics.

However, it is challenging to disentangle these figures from the surge of deepfake pornography that saturated X during the same timeframe. The X platform experienced a dramatic increase in engagement as AI-generated explicit images became widespread, and with an estimated 1.8 million sexualized images produced in just nine days, the reported image-generation statistics likely include a significant amount of this controversial content.

The most captivating segment of the presentation came at its conclusion, when Musk reiterated the significance of space-based data centers despite the inherent technical complexities. Musk further elaborated, envisioning a moon-based factory for AI satellites, complete with a lunar mass driver—essentially an electromagnetic catapult—to launch them. With such infrastructure, Musk suggested, an AI cluster could be launched that is capable of harnessing substantial portions of the sun’s total energy output or even extending its reach to other galaxies.

“It’s difficult to imagine what an intelligence of that scale would think about,” Musk commented, “but it’s going to be incredibly exciting to see it happen.”
