French AI firm Mistral AI, most recently valued at $13.8 billion, has completed its inaugural acquisition. The company, a rival to OpenAI, has reached an agreement to purchase Koyeb, a startup based in Paris known for streamlining the large-scale deployment of AI applications and overseeing their underlying infrastructure.
While Mistral is primarily recognized for its large language model (LLM) development, this acquisition signals its broader strategic aim to become a comprehensive full-stack provider. The company previously unveiled Mistral Compute, an AI cloud infrastructure service, in June 2025, and anticipates Koyeb’s integration will significantly boost its progress.
Established in 2020 by three ex-staff members of the French cloud firm Scaleway, Koyeb was created to enable developers to handle data without concerns about server management, leveraging the serverless model. This strategy became increasingly pertinent with the rising demands of AI, leading to the introduction of Koyeb Sandboxes, designed for deploying AI agents in secure, isolated settings.
Prior to this acquisition, Koyeb’s platform facilitated the deployment of models from various providers, including Mistral. According to a blog post from Koyeb, the platform will maintain its operations. However, its expertise and technology will now be integrated to assist Mistral in deploying models on client-owned hardware (on-premises), enhancing GPU utilization, and expanding AI inference capabilities—the process by which trained AI models generate outputs—as stated in a Mistral press release.
The agreement stipulates that Koyeb’s 13 staff members, along with its three co-founders, Yann Léger, Edouard Bonlieu, and Bastien Chatelard (photographed in 2020), will integrate into Mistral’s engineering department, which is led by CTO and co-founder Timothée Lacroix. With Lacroix at the helm, Koyeb anticipates its platform will evolve into an essential element of Mistral Compute in the upcoming months.
Lacroix stated, “Koyeb’s offerings and specialized knowledge will expedite our advancements in computing and help establish a robust AI cloud.” Mistral has been actively expanding its cloud-related goals. Recently, the company revealed a $1.4 billion investment for data centers in Sweden, responding to the increasing need for non-U.S. based infrastructure.
To date, Koyeb had secured $8.6 million in funding, encompassing a $1.6 million pre-seed round in 2020 and a subsequent $7 million seed round in 2023, spearheaded by the Paris-based VC firm Serena. Floriane de Maupeou, a principal at Serena, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, noting to TechCrunch that this merger is crucial “in establishing the bedrock of sovereign AI infrastructure in Europe.”
Driven by a combination of geopolitical advantages and its commitment to assisting businesses in leveraging AI, Mistral recently achieved the significant milestone of $400 million in annual recurring revenue. Going forward, Koyeb will also concentrate on serving enterprise customers, and its Starter tier will no longer be available for new sign-ups.
The financial specifics of the transaction were not revealed by Mistral, and there is no information regarding potential future acquisitions. However, during his address at Stockholm’s Techarena conference last week, CEO Arthur Mensch indicated that Mistral is actively recruiting for infrastructure and various other positions, presenting the company to potential hires as an entity “headquartered in Europe, conducting cutting-edge research in Europe.”
