On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled dynamic visual explanations, a new ChatGPT feature that allows users to observe how formulas, variables, and mathematical relationships change in real time.
Rather than simply reading an explanation or viewing a static diagram, users can now engage directly with interactive visuals. For example, when exploring the Pythagorean theorem, one can adjust the lengths of a triangle’s sides and instantly see the hypotenuse update. This allows users to manipulate numbers and variables and observe immediate corresponding changes.
To experiment with this feature, simply pose questions to ChatGPT such as “What is a lens equation?” or “How can I find the area of a circle?” ChatGPT will then provide both an explanation and an interactive module for manipulation.
Currently, these visuals are available for over 70 math and science topics, including the binomial square, Charles’ law, area of a circle, compound interest, Coulomb’s law, difference of squares, exponential decay, Hooke’s law, kinetic energy, linear equations, and Ohm’s law.
OpenAI intends to broaden the feature’s scope by adding more interactive topics in the future. All logged-in ChatGPT users can access it.
The introduction of dynamic visual explanations is significant as it subtly redefines the tool’s function. Instead of merely providing answers, it encourages users to interact directly with core concepts. The extent to which this fosters deeper understanding will likely be determined by its application.
With AI consistently reshaping educational methods, it has ignited vigorous discussions within the academic community. While some educators express concerns about excessive dependence on AI, numerous teachers and students have already adopted these tools, incorporating them into their regular study habits. OpenAI reports that over 140 million individuals weekly utilize ChatGPT for assistance with math and science, subjects historically difficult for many learners.
Other prominent AI firms are also investigating comparable interactive functionalities. For instance, Google’s Gemini introduced its own interactive diagrams and visuals last November.
This latest addition complements other educational tools recently introduced to ChatGPT, including study mode, designed to walk users through problems incrementally. Additionally, QuizGPT allows users to create flashcards and request quizzes on any subject in preparation for examinations.
