WordPress Unveils my.WordPress.net for Browser-Based Personal Publishing and AI Tools

The organization behind the open-source publishing software, WordPress, revealed on Wednesday that its publishing platform can now operate completely within a web browser. With its new service, my.WordPress.net, individuals can establish a site and commence publishing without the need for registration, a hosting plan, or domain acquisition. This innovative offering utilizes the identical technology behind WordPress demonstrations, transforming it into an enduring, individual publishing environment.

A significant limitation to this browser-based WordPress operation is that sites created on my.WordPress.net are private by default and cannot be accessed publicly online.

As detailed in a blog post announcing the service, these sites “are not optimized for traffic, discovery, or presentation, nor do they need to be.” The platform is envisioned as a personal space for ideas to develop before public sharing, or perhaps never to be shared externally.

Sites generated via this service are intrinsically linked to your web browser, with all data stored within the browser’s local storage. Consequently, you cannot access your site from different devices. However, users have the option to migrate their site to a specialized WordPress host should they decide to make it publicly available.

This new offering positions WordPress as an ideal personal workspace for various activities such as private writing, journaling, drafting, conducting research, learning, or developing bespoke tools. To support the latter, my.WordPress.net includes an App Catalog featuring diverse tools powered by WordPress plug-ins, such as a Personal CRM, Personal RSS Reader, a bookmarking utility, an AI Workspace, and others.

The announcement highlights that my.WordPress.net operates on WordPress Playground, an open-source initiative enabling single-click WordPress installation on any device and integrating with OpenAI and CLI applications for tool creation. Consequently, an AI assistant can be employed to customize my.WordPress.net, whether by fine-tuning existing plug-ins or developing new ones.

Furthermore, the assistant can query data stored within WordPress, retaining this information to transform WordPress into an AI-accessible personal knowledge base.

The post advises that initial launch times for the service might be longer, and regular backups are encouraged. With approximately 100MB of starting storage, the platform is best suited for compact, personal applications and scenarios.

Should you wish to remove your current work, a reset button is available to clear the site. Alternatively, users can configure new, temporary instances that automatically reset upon browser refresh.

This service’s introduction comes after the establishment of a WordPress AI team in the previous year, dedicated to developing AI-driven products for developers. Concurrently, WordPress.com, the commercial hosting provider, also debuted an AI-powered website builder last year, facilitating site design through a chatbot-like AI interface.
