OpenAI Introduces ‘Dots’: New Autonomous AI Assistants Powered by GPT-6 Astra

At its Dev Day event on Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled “Dots,” a novel personal agentic assistant utilizing GPT-6 Astra. The company characterizes Dots as “remarkably capable, always-on agents designed to manage various tasks.”

In contrast to Codex or ChatGPT, Dots are engineered to function independently of specific hardware or interfaces, continuously pursuing user-defined objectives in the background with minimal oversight.

OpenAI stated in an announcement post, “Today, you can create your primary dot, name it, and customize it.” The company envisions that “over time, teams of Dots will collaborate on your behalf.”

Starting Tuesday, Dots will be accessible within ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Users can initiate Dots from either Codex or ChatGPT.

In its announcement, OpenAI outlines diverse applications for Dots. For instance, a software developer might deploy a dedicated dot to monitor customer feedback, implementing bug fixes and requested features as needed. Similarly, a scientist could employ a dot to rerun analyses and investigate unexpected results as experimental data becomes available.

Individuals can communicate with Dots through Slack, Teams, and other organizational platforms, with text message support to be introduced soon.

OpenAI also foresees “specialist Dots” that undertake particular responsibilities. Individual Dots can be provisioned with specific identities, credentials, and tools via existing systems. OpenAI is already collaborating with Microsoft to integrate Dots into the company’s Agent 365 security controls.

While much of this functionality was already achievable through Codex and similar agentic frameworks, Dots consolidates these features into a new offering, with a strong focus on independent agentic actions.

The branding also introduces a cheerful, cartoonish persona, reminiscent of Meta’s recently launched Muse agent. Visually, the Dots appear as… dots. These small, floating cartoon figures represent a refreshed look for OpenAI’s software and are the latest instance of a company striving to make AI more approachable.
